canon point: Just got Shelby back a few weeks ago, currently about to be kidnapped! Not that he knows that
previous cr: nup

physical appearance: Garrett is pretty damn fine. Standing at around 6’1”, he’s lean, muscled and tan – the sort of guy who spends time outside and obviously keeps himself in shape. His hair is dark brown and generally kept shaved close to his head, although in recent months it has grown out to be sort of wavy and floppy. His eyes are a dark grey colour with an interesting spot of brown, and he holds himself with confidence, usually with a smirk or easy smile at hand.

world information:
The world Garrett comes from resembles any medieval fantasy world. There's very little technology, especially by modern standards. Magic exists, but it is on a decline in studies and in the power that wizards and mages are born with. Currently, only the capitol of Risdall houses a university for teaching magic. Multiple gods are still worshipped, many of them shared by the countries in this world.

There were once dragons in this world, but as with the decline of magic, people hunted out the creatures, and they're thought to be extinct. There are pygmy dragons still in existence, but none would consider them “true” dragons, because of their size and inability to fly. Many believe the extinction of dragons and the slow decline of magic are related, and that when the dragons return, so will magic.

As Garrett’s story mainly deals in Kinniburgh and Risdall, that's what I'll mention the most. Shelby’s ap has links and shit, okayokay.

Kinniburgh is very much how we would perceive a country if it was run by the mafia as we know it. Centuries ago, there once was a royal family. That was around the decline of the dragons. Citizens, angry with the monarchy, overthrew the nobility in French Revolution-style, installing their own government. Since then, stability in the country has declined, but not their power. The nobles control the Parliament, through money or threats. However, they are a country of the arts, producing and manufacturing more entertainers and goods than any other country, especially their neighbor to the north. Underneath of their false pretense of being a pleasant place, a cult exists among the nobility. The worship of the trickster gods, the Many Faces, is a brutal one. They require human sacrifice, mainly of a the firstborn child on their tenth birthday. A celebration is usually held at this time as the cult members hope the gods will help them continue to reign. To understand Kinniburgh is to basically look at it as though it were a parfait: layers and layers.

To the north, Risdall is a more and stable country. The monarchy still exists there, the Taliesin family having been in power for a century. 100 years ago, they took the throne from the family who had ruled Risdall. The von Magicas and the Taliesins were families with the most powerful magic, but as the decline of dragons occurred, so did magic, and both lines fizzled out. Until Francis von Magica, a wizard in Risdall with his power had thought to be extinct. And it was until future queen, Natalia, gave birth to her son that the Taliesin family had their own powerhouse of magic. Since the birth of the future king of the Taliesin line, a small insurgence has been brewing in Risdall, with Francis and his daughter leading it against the usurpers of the throne.

history:
Garrett Taliesin was born in Dillinger, capital city of the land of Risdall, second child to Queen Gayla and King Nolan. In a land where the eldest child inherits, his sister Natalia (older by five years) was considered the heir to the throne, with Garrett being a handy back up. Natalia was responsible and level headed and looked like she would do a good job and so while their parents impressed a need to be a responsible and fair leader on her, Garrett was doted on and pretty much spoiled rotten. The attention and love he received growing up imbued him with a sense of invincibility that made him into kind of an asshole, as described above. He was a very sociable kid, although he never really figured out who was actually his friend and who was his friend because he was a prince (it was most of them :’|), or even that there was a difference.

He was seven years old when his future marriage was arranged to the newborn Princess Althea of the nearby Abere Islands, but that never really bothered him. It was an aspect of being a prince he’d been brought up with, and the Abere Islands were a patriarchal society anyway, seemed like a sweet deal to his seven year old self. He attended his lessons, but only really paid attention when there was something that really engaged him – and when he was engaged he was a quick learner. He was more interested in hunting and riding, though, a passion that stayed with him into adulthood. He gave sex a shot when he was fifteen in a brothel on a dare, and that was that. The next seven or so years were spent with other young nobles, carousing through the country, hunting, drinking, riding, banging and generally just having the time of their lives. Garrett was always the life of any party, a mix of his bright and friendly personality, and the fact that he tended to throw money around like nobody’s business.

It was Natalia who quietly talked their parents into realising Garrett was out of control. Married and with a newborn son, his sister pointed out that even if he wasn’t going to rule, his future bride was about to come of age and that he was in no way prepared for the political realities of that marriage. So it ended up that Garrett, having been told there was a ‘surprise’ party for him, ended up in a tower far, far away from Dillinger. His parents communicated via magic that he was there to learn some humility, his sister told him he’d brought it on himself, and Garrett raged and pouted and made a fuss until the dragon set down outside his tower.

He thought it was a joke at first, but then his bed was set on fire through the window and he realised that this was nothing he found particularly funny. The tower had been taken over by FRANCIS VON MAGICA, and after his parents couldn’t make contact, they realised they needed some outside help. It wasn’t until the two knights arrived that Garrett found out they’d advertised him as a princess for fear that no one would want to rescue a prince, and it wasn’t until after he didn’t have any choice but to leave with the knights that he realised they weren’t knights at all, but one assassin and a disowned noblewoman who promptly ransomed him off for money, and kept the damn dragon. His life was grand.

He tried talking his way out the first night, running away the second. They tied him to a tree the third night, and on the fourth he tried sexing his way out. Then they laughed at him and Bubbles ate his shoes and he was still tied to a tree. Garrett was beginning to feel that life kind of sucked when the time for the trade off happened, only instead of getting traded off, he nearly got dead when FRANCIS VON MAGICA attacked. His escort was killed and he and Chuck and Shelby barely escaped with their lives. Life was super grand. They made a deal, though – the two ladies would help keep Garrett alive on the trip to return him to his parents, and he would pay them lots of money. So began their misadventures!

The group dynamic slowly shifted as they got to know each other. Garrett was a haughty bastard at first, but staying alive meant pitching in and helping; after a while he started to do it without asking, and found small ways that he could help that they hadn’t thought of. Chuck and Shelby opened his eyes to a world he hadn’t begun to be aware of before – that of commoners, and people whose lives hadn’t been pretty shiny like his. People who were hurt by those who should have helped them. FRANCIS VON MAGICA hounded them mercilessly – Garrett was the key to a bloodless coup, by marrying him to his daughter, and more than that, their offspring would be unimaginably powerful, two magical strong bloodlines mixing together. FRANCIS VON MAGICA wanted his hands on that sort of power. There was a particular adventure where they were spotting in a village; days later, the village was nothing but a scar on the landscape, burnt to the ground.

He grew closer to Shelby first, finding her fascinating and also less likely to hit him. When Chuck was kidnapped by her family, he immediately agreed to help Shelby get her back; he ended up with a fancy hat out of the situation (which later helped FRANCIS VON MAGICA track him down), and a closer relationship with the woman. Chuck was more difficult to get close to – their personalities tended to clash, to say the least. But when Shelby disappeared for reasons unknown to either of them, they were alone together for a month or more and couldn’t help but grow closer as they searched for her. Eventually it dawned upon Garrett that he was sort of in love with both of these fine ladies, which he then promptly decided to ignore – sure he’d suggested a threesome in the beginning, but he was meant to be mature now. Not hounding his friends for threesomes.

Not long after this realisation, they made camp outside a village (having learnt their lesson about staying in villages themselves). Garrett wandered in with a vague thought of buying the girls something nice when he woke up in Abax. Oops.

personality:
Garrett is sort of a reformed asshole, you could say. He wasn’t a dick in the sense that he likes to drown children and strangle puppies, but he was the second born child of a royal family who ruled over a relatively peaceful land – getting all of the perks of this and none of the responsibilities helped to form his personality. While he preferred to think of himself as generous – he shared his time, his body, his bottomless wallet, after all! – he was pretty much a selfish brat. It wasn’t that he didn’t think of people outside of himself – he loves his family, especially his sister (no matter how much she enjoys trolling his life) and had no shame about displaying his love for them – but more that, for the majority of his life, he couldn’t see outside his own immediate circle and surroundings. He was very much focussed on his own pleasure, perfectly amiable while he was getting what he wanted, but turning into a pouty, argumentative brat if it was taken away from him without a good reason. And, quite obviously, because he wanted it? No reason was good enough. Basically, he was only really interested into things that could benefit him, something that led to him being a proficient enough swordsman, but nowhere near a master (too much effort), and passing skilled at magic, but only things that he was interested in learning (like certain electricity tricks).

However, the guy has undergone something of a metamorphosis in past months, most of this a result of hard work and a small amount. Getting locked in a tower brought out the uglier side of his personality – he was offended, angry, arrogant and rude, haughty and demanding, and once the tower was taken over by an evil wizard, incapable of understanding the seriousness of his situation. He was a prince didn’t that make him untouchable? A lot has happened recently, though, and Garrett’s raw material has been forged into something deeper, kinder.

He’s willing to think more about the long term, and to put effort into things that don’t have an immediate benefit, or any benefit for him at all. He can look at a situation now and understand why he should care about it, even if it doesn’t affect him and would endanger him to help. The generosity of feeling that he always showed around his family has tempered into a genuine desire to help the people of his country, and he’s gained a greater understanding of the difficulties involved in running a country, and the responsibilities. Where once he might have been jealous of his sister for being the future queen, he now feels that you couldn’t pay him to do the job she’s been preparing for all her life. No longer thinking that he would be THE BEST KING EVER, he acknowledges that he probably doesn’t have the temperament or the skill to be in charge of Risdall.

Even with this new maturity, though, he’s still lacking a bit in the common sense department. Sure they’ve been having grand adventures and Garrett is more wary of things not always being as they seem, but now he wants to help people, he wants to help ALL THE PEOPLE. He’s kind of generous to a fault, and doesn’t really have enough life experience to know that you really shouldn’t take candy from strangers, even if the strangers are pretty and seem nice. He’s currently managed to fall in love with both of his ladies, Chuck and Shelby and unlike his usual smooth manner with the ladies, will probably herpderp around them as he tries to pretend that he’s not. He still views sex in a pretty casual light, though, so it wouldn’t be surprisingly to see him wandering around the city, macking on all the ladies and maybe some of the dudes. While he’s mostly into chicks, if a guy happens to catch his eye, he won’t say no (~._.)~ Coming from a land where the oldest child is heir, whether male, female or adopted has given him a pretty easy going attitude towards sexuality

abilities/powers:
Garrett is moderately talented at his world’s form of magic - which, while consisting of spells and potions and runes for more complicated things, is most based off will and discipline from those who possess it. While he comes from a powerful magical bloodline, Garrett himself never had the patience to bother learning how to use it, so he can mostly just do small, helpful things like heat up a room, create light, and that one electricity trick. Magic involving heat, light, electricity and air comes easier to him than water or earth things.

BAM a link.

third person sample:
As kidnappings went, Garrett personally felt that the person behind this could have done a better job.

Sure, the waking up in a completely different place when you didn’t remember having gone to sleep was pretty creepy and the paper slip was a nice stylistic touch, but as someone who had been appropriately locked up in the past, it was Garrett’s opinion that there had been a big oversight what with the whole just…letting him go out and explore thing. Seriously. His own parents had done a more thorough job of kidnapping him.

Still, whoever it was that had taken him – and that was another oversight, not making any demands or giving any information at all about what this was about, how could he negotiate (or at least mouth off) if they didn’t do that? – well, they’d gotten one thing right. And as things to get right when you were conducting a kidnapping went, this was the big one.

He couldn’t find the girls.

Okay so neither one of them were, strictly speaking, girls, but referring to them as ‘the women’ felt strange and vaguely creepy, even in his head. The point was, neither Shelby nor Chuck were anywhere in sight, and Garrett – Garrett was not okay with that. At all.
